The Probation Department provides opportunities for prosocial change and offers a wide range of effective community justice interventions through supervision, monitoring court orders, and utilizing community partnerships.

Through a victim-centered approach, the agency provides comprehensive crime victims services to all members of the community, including a 24-hour sexual assault/domestic violence hotline. The Crime Victims Assistance program provides victims with crisis counseling, advocacy and accompaniment to police agencies, court, the District Attorney and the County Attorney and hospital.

Probation differs from parole in that probation is a supervision sentence imposed by a court in lieu of a jail or prison sentence. Parole is supervision imposed upon release from state prison. Probation is a County function. Parole is a State function located in Poughkeepsie at 452-0620.

Probation is comprised of several divisions:

  • Family Court: All services to referred Juvenile Delinquency cases or PINS cases to age 18.
  • Pretrial Services: Release services for defendants.
  • Community Service: Provides courts with an alternative to incarceration
  • Presentence Investigation and Criminal Supervision: Completion of Court ordered reports and community supervision.
  • Crime Victims Assistance: Service to all victims of crime in Ulster County. The program also provides prevention work in the community.
  • Stop DWI: The STOP-DWI (Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Intoxicated) Program empowers counties to coordinate local efforts to reduce alcohol and other drug related traffic crashes. Ulster County’s STOP DWI program also monitors all Conditional Discharge (CD) cases convicted of DWI.
  • Restorative Justice and Community Empowerment Center (RJCEC): The RJCEC is a space that was remodeled in 2018 to provide for the increase in programming and services to youth correlated to the Raise the Age law. The main conference room area is also available to community groups to use for events that serve the mission of service to the community.
