To report a death to the Medical Examiner’s Office, please call the Ulster County Department of Emergency Services at (845) 338-1440. Please DO NOT call the Department of Emergency Services unless you are calling from a hospital, physician’s office, law enforcement agency, or other entity responsible for reporting a death; any non-urgent matters will be handled during business hours.
Once it is decided that a death falls within the jurisdiction of the medical examiner, it is our responsibility to determine the cause and manner of death, produce an autopsy report, and certify a death certificate. The cause of death is the disease process or injury that results in the person’s death. The manner of death indicates how the death occurred and includes designations of accident, homicide, natural, suicide, pending investigation, or undetermined.
